Endoscopy Q & A

What is an endoscopy?

An endoscopy is a procedure in which Dr. Hussain captures images of your digestive tract using a tiny camera. It’s a common recommendation when you’re suffering from gastrointestinal issues like heartburn and abdominal pain, and it’s also part of some treatments.

What are the types of endoscopy?

There are many types of endoscopy, including:

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)

EGD is also called upper endoscopy. It encompasses your esophagus, stomach, and the upper part of your small intestine. The long, flexible endoscope goes through your mouth for an EGD. It’s a common diagnostic test if you’re dealing with heartburn, abdominal pain, and other possible issues in the upper digestive tract.

Capsule endoscopy

In a capsule endoscopy, you swallow a tiny capsule (about the size of a vitamin). The capsule contains a microscopic camera that captures images of your digestive tract and relays them to a wearable recorder attached to a belt.

Colonoscopy

In a colonoscopy, the endoscope goes through your anus to capture images of your entire colon and rectum to check for problems. A colonoscopy is a common colon cancer screening test, and it can also help with diagnosis of issues like bloody stool or abdominal pain.

Sigmoidoscopy

In a sigmoidoscopy, the endoscope goes through your anus to capture images of part of your colon and rectum. Sigmoidoscopy isn’t a substitute for complete colonoscopy, but it’s often helpful for discovering and treating problems like polyps.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangio pancreatography (ERCP)

An ERCP is a specialized endoscopy/X-ray combination procedure that diagnoses and treats issues with your bile and pancreatic ducts. In an ERCP, the endoscope goes through your mouth and down into your small intestine. Dr. Hussain is one of a select few specialists in the Houston area with advanced training in this highly specialized procedure.

Depending on your specific needs, Dr. Hussain may perform other types of endoscopy as well.

How do I get ready for an endoscopy?

Preparation depends on the type of endoscopy you’re having. Dr. Hussain gives you specific instructions ahead of your procedure. You may need to fast for 6-8 hours before your endoscopy, and you may also need to discontinue some medications according to Dr. Hussain’s instructions. Typically, you need to arrange for a loved one to drive you home after your endoscopy.
